The rear of the receiver is marked 'NATIONAL/POSTAL METER/4298005' and the front section of the barrel is marked 'I.B.M.

These NPM carbines had a very low production rate and original surviving samples are very difficult to obtain. The stock and handguard is correctly coded for National Postal Meter. The oval cut high wood stock and forend have all of the original finish intact. This gun is in wonderful fine unissued looking condition! All of the original finish is intact on the gun and parts. This National Postal Meter has all of the correct original parts for the serial number range and time frame. Visible markings include serial number 4344611, Buffalo Arm 18 barrel dated 12-1943 with flaming bomb and light import mark on underside, front sight marked SI U, type 3 barrel band marked AI, adjustable stamped rear sight marked L.R. The front and rear sights are original to this carbine. National Postal Meter model M1 US Carbine chambered in. Underwood was one of the barrel suppliers for National Postal Meter as they did not produce their own barrels. It has the standard military dated barrel produced by Underwood.
